DAS drug administration system
When in certain conditions the pain is uncontrollable
or side effects from narcotics too severe the
next step oftentimes is a morphine pump. This
requires implantation of a reservoir the size
of a hockey puck that rests under the skin. This
reservoir has a motor that pumps morphine intrathecally
to allow maximum absorption to brain and spinal
cord. The total mg of morphine daily consumption
usually goes down so the patient has less systemic
effects. The reservoir has to be refilled at three
months this can usually be done in the treating
doctors office.
