Our Specialty: Pain frequently
represents emotional distress in addition to physical
hardships. The goal of the practice of pain management
is total relief, or as substantial relief as possible.
There is an emphasis on return to function, quality
of life is our paramount concern. The pain management
staff offers recommendations and clearly defines
benefits and risks of each course of action or
procedure offered. Patients and referring physicians
are always informed of findings and proposed treatment
plans.
Because
we try to develop an individualized program for
each patient, an initial assessment is always
performed. Beyond providing specialty medical
care, the medical team acts as patient advocate.
Necessary contact with neurologists, neurosurgeons,
orthopedists, internists, radiologists, physitrists,
physical and occupational therapists is maintained.
Free communication with other specialties allow
us to facilitate support at identified points
of need.
Chronic Pain: Chronic pain does
not resolve within an appropriate time frame,
if at all. It does not go away when it is supposed
to. It can be extremely debilitating and frequently
requires unique treatment approaches. Pain syndromes
of recent onset, as well as long-standing ones,
may require a chronic pain approach. In the chronic
pain patient, techniques often useful for acute
pain management may lose effectiveness, be inappropriate
or even counterproductive.
Pain may arise from accident or injury, cancer
arthritis, a multitude of physical ailments or
even emotional distress. It may affect the head,
neck, torso or any extremity. Whatever the cause,
chronic pain transcends simply physical hurting.
It limits the activities of every day living and
can erode the sufferer's ability to function as
he or she expects and deserves. Some people can
become preoccupied with a search for relief to
the exclusion of normal relationships and activities.
